A Greek sculptor, Pygmalion, ardently chiseled a block of marble to create a statue of the perfect woman from his long cherished image. Moved by his passion, the goddess Venus brought the statue to life for him. So goes the ancient story.

animer_sa_statue,_Jean-Baptiste_RegnaultFrom the legend of “Pygmalion” we learn the power of our belief to make our ideas come to life. When we are aware of this power, it will make a world of difference in our performance. Learning English is no exception. To attain where you want to be with your English, you first need to believe you can get there, set a clear goal and stick at it, and moreover, have a sense of excitement in your learning. With this mindset, you will never fail to develop yourself and to reach the level you have aimed at. Always keep your expectations high, never let negative thoughts cloud your vision, and most importantly, never give up.

Creating a bigger picture and working towards it with excitement are crucial to bringing positive results in your learning. Looking back on my life, my passion for English was strong enough to surmount all the difficulties I faced, including working three jobs to support myself. It was the desire to achieve something from my language skills that motivated me to tenaciously stick at it. When connected to this bigger picture, even a tedious job such as waitressing was to me an important means to my ends. I also believe that our positive attitudes towards learning any language can contribute a lot to our performance. Studies show those actively engaged in learning produce better results than those who do it reluctantly. You should wholeheartedly make the best of every opportunity you get with English, be it in a lesson setting or in your own self-study. Enjoy the process of learning, lest a negative attitude should undercut our enthusiasm.

Over the years, I have witnessed many students make great accomplishments through hard work. As a teacher, I will do my best to help bring out the best in each of my students without setting limitations on what they can achieve. We can all be a Pygmalion in our endeavors if only we don’t let our surroundings or negative feelings dictate to us.

animer_sa_statue,_Jean-Baptiste_Regnault我々はこのピグマリオンの伝説から、想いを実現する信念の力を学ぶのだ。
