Hello everyone! My name is Daniel Johnson. I am from Cincinnati, OH, USA which is the home of the baseball team, Cincinnati Reds (the Reds use the same “C” emblem as the Hiroshima Carps) and the American football team, Cincinnati Bengals. We also have Kings Island which is an amusement park for those of you who like roller coasters.

I received a Bachelor of Science from Ohio University at Athens, OH , where I majored in Global Studies specializing in East Asia with two minors in Japanese and Geography. When I was a sophomore at Ohio University I studied abroad in Nagoya at Chubu University for six months. It was one of the best experiences in my life. I really enjoy Japanese culture and all the differences between it and America. I hope to show these cultural differences to you so that we may understand and appreciate each other’s culture and our own. I believe this is very important in our world today.

As for my hobbies, I love Kendo. I started Kendo when I was a freshman at Ohio University and when I went to Chubu University I had the privilege of training under an 8th Dan! When I returned to Ohio University after Japan, I became the captain of Ohio University’s Kendo Club and also achieved the rank of 1st Kyu. I plan on continuing Kendo when I arrive in Tsuyama, so if any of you practice it please tell me! Maybe we can even practice together!

I also enjoy playing baseball. I have been playing since I was able to walk, though unfortunately I have not been able to play much in college. I am a fan of Chess and Igo also although I am not good at all. So if you like either feel free to play with me. I definitely want to get involved in the community around Tsuyama, so if you see me on the street go ahead and say “Hello!” to me.

I have had many teaching experiences. I have taught Kendo to American college students for two years. Many of the people who join Kendo at O.U. are starting it for the first time so it is very exciting to teach them and watch them grow as a Kendo player and as a person. I also tutor Japanese college students that study abroad at O.U. in Public Speaking. It is interesting to watch their English improve day by day without them even noticing it. I am sure this happens to you guys too.

I expect to learn a lot from my stay in Tsuyama. I plan to stay there a while and hope I can grow and mature as teacher. As a teacher you can expect me to be very enthusiastic. I like to have fun and like for my students to have fun also. I think this is very important to learning a second language. So come into my classroom ready to learn and to have fun. I am very excited to meet everyone and I hope we can create life-long friendships.

皆さん こんにちは。 ダニエル・ジョンソンです。 アメリカのオハイオ州、シンシナティから来ました。 シンシナティといえば、シンシナティー・レッズの野球チームの本拠地です。(レッズは広島カープと同じ”Ｃ”のマークを使っています。) そして、アメリカンフットボールのチームの シンシナティー・ベンガルもあります。 また、ローラーコースターの好きな人にはキング・アイランドという遊園地もありますよ。

私は、オハイオ州、アセンにあるオハイオ大学で学士号を取得しました。 そこでは 東アジアを専門とした 国際研究を専攻し、日本語と地理を副専攻科目として学びました。 大学2年生の時、名古屋の中部大学で6か月間学びました。 そこでは、日本文化と、日本とアメリカの違いを経験でき、私の人生の中の、一番素晴らしい経験の一つになりました。 お互いに理解を深め分かりあえることができるように、このような文化の違いを皆さんとも話し合えることを願っています。 それは 今日の世界で とても重要であると考えるからです。

趣味は、剣道が大好きです。 オハイオ大学の一年生の時 剣道を始め、中部大学では八段の先生について練習する機会に恵まれました。 オハイオ大学に帰ってからは、大学の剣道クラブのキャプテンを務め、一級も取得しました。 津山でも剣道を続けるつもりでいます。 もし皆さんの中で 剣道を練習をされる方は、教えて下さい。 ご一緒に練習できるかもしれません。

私は また野球をするのも好きです。 とても小さな時から ずっとプレーしています。 残念ながら 大学ではあまり野球をする機会はありませんが。 チェスと、下手ですが 囲碁も楽しみます。 もし、興味がある方は 一緒にしましょう。 津山のコミュニティーにも是非 関わりたいと思っていますので、もし 通りで私を見かけたら、声をかけて下さいね。

これまでに 多くの指導経験があります。 2年間 アメリカの大学生に剣道を教えました。 大学で剣道クラブに加わる人たちは、初めて剣道をする人が多く、指導を通じて 彼らが剣道家として また人として成長するのを見るのは大変 楽しいことです。 私は、またオハイオ大学で学んでいる日本人生徒をパブリックスピーキングで指導しました。 本人たちが気が付かないうちに、英語が日に日に上達してゆくのをとても興味深く見ていました。 皆さんもきっと同じ体験をされることでしょう。

津山の生活から多くのことを学びたいと思っています。 しばらくは津山に滞在するつもりですので、先生として成長することを願っています。 先生として、私はとても熱心ですし、楽しく指導し、また生徒さんにも楽しんでもらいたいと思っています。 外国語を学ぶのに、このことはとても大切であると考えています。 ですから、私の授業には楽しく学ぶつもりでいらして下さい。 皆さんにお会いできることに わくわくしています、そして生涯続く友情が築けることを願っています。
