The fourth week in every November my family celebrates the Thanksgiving Holiday. Sometimes we celebrate at home with the immediate family, other times we invite friends to join us, travel to my uncle’s house in Pennsylvania (celebrating with my mother’s side of the family), and once in a while our family will travel to my grandparent’s place in Texas (celebrating with all of the relatives on my father’s side of the family). Regardless of how we celebrate, we always have a great time during the Thanksgiving Holiday.

Thanksgiving Day morning is always something special to look forward to. The house is filled with the wonderful smell of mom’s fresh cooking and the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade (There is a Thanksgiving Day parade held in New York City every year where hundreds of giant balloons the size of small houses are paraded down the street with floats packed with bands from all over the U.S. This joyous event plays a major role in bringing in the Holiday Season) is played on the television.

When our family celebrates Thanksgiving at home my father is usually put in charge of cooking the Turkey, while my mother cooks everything else. My mother makes various dishes including: stuffing (a seasoned mixture used to stuff or fill food), mashed potatoes, gravy, rolls, vegetable salad, fruit salad, cranberry cake, yams (a moist-fleshed and usually orange-fleshed sweet potato), and desserts such as apple pie, pecan pie, and pumpkin pie. The Thanksgiving Day meal at home generally begins around 3 or 4 in the afternoon with a word of thanks (everybody tells why they are thankful. For example, somebody would say something like “I am thankful for being with the family and for everybody’s safe arrival at home”) from each member of the family. After that we continue on with a Thanksgiving Day toast and begin eating. The rest of the day consists of being with family, digesting all of our food, taking walks, and watching American Football.

Thanksgiving Day with my grandparents in Texas and at my uncle’s house in Pennsylvania is almost the same as celebrating at home except for one thing. After dinner is over at my uncle’s house there is “after dinner entertainment,” where each member of the family must perform an act such as: singing, telling jokes, giving a speech or playing an instrument. The only traditional performance comes from my grandmother who plays the organ every Thanksgiving Day.

There is nothing like eating a wonderful Turkey! I will definitely miss celebrating Thanksgiving Day and all of the wonderful food that my mother makes this year.

毎年１１月の第４週、私の家族は感謝祭を祝います。　家族だけで自宅で祝う時もあれば、友人を招待したり、ペンシルバニア州の叔父（母方の）の家に出向いて行ったり、また　時にはテキサス州の祖父母の家に家族皆で行ったりします。　どんな風に祝っても、いつも感謝祭のお休みは楽しいものです。 　　感謝祭の朝は　特にいつも楽しみにしています。　家中に母のおいしそうな料理の香りが漂っているのです。　そして　メーシーの感謝祭のパレードが　テレビで見られます。（ニューヨーク市で毎年行われるパレードで、小さな家ほどもある巨大なバルーンが、アメリカ中から集まったブラスバンドを引き連れた山車と共に　通りを練り歩くのです。　この楽しい出来事がお祝い気分を盛り上げるのに大きな役割を果たしています。） 　　私の家族が自宅で感謝祭を祝う時は、父がいつも七面鳥を料理する役を受け持ち、母がその他の物を料理します。　母は色々な種類の料理を作ってくれます。　それは　スタッフィング（料理前に鳥などに詰めておく　味付けされた材料）、マッシュ・ポテト、グレービー（肉ソース）、ロールパン、野菜サラダ、フルーツサラダ、クランベリーケーキ、ヤムいも（水分がある、通常オレンジ色がかったサツマイモの一種）、そして　アップルパイ、ペカンパイ、パンプキンパイといったデザートです。

我が家の感謝祭の食事は　通常午後３時か４時に　家族一人一人からの感謝の言葉と共に始まります。（誰もが　どういった事柄に感謝をするのか言ってゆくのです。　たとえば、「家族皆が無事　集うことが出来た事に感謝します。」といった事を誰か言うかもしれません。）　その後、感謝祭の祝杯に続き　食事を始めます。　その日は一日ずっと家族と過ごし、散歩をしたり　アメリカンフットボールを鑑賞したりして食べ物を消化させます。

テキサス州の祖父母宅でや、ペンシルバニア州の叔父宅での感謝祭は　ある一つの事柄を除いては　我が家で祝うのとほとんど変わりありません。　叔父の家では、食事が終わると、「食後の娯楽」というのがあり　家族の各々が歌ったり、ジョークを言ったり、スピーチをしたり、また楽器を弾いたりするのです。　唯一　伝統になっているのは、毎年　感謝祭の日には祖母がオルガンを弾くという事です。

美味しい七面鳥ほど素晴らしい食べ物はないほどです。　今年は　感謝祭を祝う事が出来なくて、また　母が作ってくれる素晴らしい料理を食べる事が出来なくて　本当に残念です。
