I hope the year 2013 has started out wonderfully for you. Though well into the year, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of you joy and fulfillment throughout 2013. Many of you must have included a desire to develop your English skills among your New Year’s resolutions. I would like to share with you some tips to achieving success in learning English.

Set a specific and realistic goal, make detailed plans to achieve it and actively engage in the process. First of all, you should believe you can do it by creating a mental image of yourself achieving it, and be specific about your plans by writing down the goals you wish to fulfill each day. Be your challenge in passing a test or becoming a better communicator, you should commit yourself to setting aside specific times with English in your daily routine. Should your busy schedule keep you from studying each day, you can certainly squeeze in what little time is available. For busy learners, I strongly recommend you take advantage of modern digital devices to facilitate your study. As for me, besides conventional paper literature, I carry a tablet computer, a smartphone and an e-reader in my bag at all times, and choose the most suitable resource depending on the situation I am in: listening to the world news on the smartphone over lunch, audio-literature while driving, walking my dog, doing the housework, reading Time magazine at my desk, downloading page-turners while sitting at the beauty parlor, and so on. I am just thrilled with the opportunities to immerse myself in English that modern technology has made available to me.

Last but not least, you should have a burning desire to achieve your goal. No matter how long you spend on English, if you go about it half-heartedly, it would be precious time wasted. It is not so much the quantity of time you spend as the quality that determines success in learning English. Recent scientific study shows that our brain can change its own structure and function through training regardless of our age, but only with our active engagement in the process. We all can make this year a fulfilling one in our endeavors with English by setting a specific goal, making detailed plans and tackling them wholeheartedly. By the end of the year, I am certain you will see great improvement in your English skills. Best of luck on your study throughout the year 2013!

2013年が皆様にとって　素晴らしい幕開けであったことを願っています。　今年に入ってしばらく経ちましたが、この機を利用して皆様にとり2013年が歓び多い充実した年となります様　お祈りいたします。　新年の抱負の中に英語の上達を願われた方も多いことでしょう。　英語の学習を成功させるための秘訣とは何でしょうか。

まず、具体的で、現実的な目標を立て、それを達成するための詳しい計画を作り、その目標達成までの過程に積極的に取り組むことです。　何よりもまず、その目標を達成しているご自分の姿をイメージし、やればできることを信じることです、そしてこれだけは毎日すべきという具体的な目標を書き出すことです。　皆さんのチャレンジが、テストに合格する、またより良いコミュニケーターになることにせよ、日課の中に英語に費やす時間を取ることを決意しなくてはいけません。もし忙しいスケジュールのため毎日の勉強は無理だとしても、少しの時間であれば捻出できるでしょう。　忙しい学習者には、学習を容易にするために近代的なデジタル機器を利用されることを強くお勧めします。　私も、従来の紙面に加えて、タブレットコンピューター、スマートフォン、電子書籍端末を常に鞄の中に入れ、昼食を食べながらスマートフォンでワールドニュースを聴いたり、運転や犬の散歩、家事をしながらオーディオブックを聴いたり、机に座っているときはタイム誌を読んだり、美容院で面白い本をダウンロードするなど、状況に応じて一番適した手段を選んでいます。　近代的な科学技術がもたらしてくれた、英語に浸る機会に、私はただただ感激しています。

最後に、重要なこととして、目標を達成するという燃えるような願望を持つことが大切です。　いい加減に取り組んでいるだけでは、貴重な時間を無駄にすることになりかねません。　英語の学習を成功させるのはそれに費やす時間の量というよりはむしろ質なのです。　最近の科学の研究によると、私たちの脳は年齢に拘らず、積極的な取り組みにより、その構造と機能を変えることができることが分かっています。　具体的な目標を立て、達成のための詳細な計画を作り、真剣にそれに取り組むことで、皆さんの英語の努力において　今年一年を充実したものにできるでしょう。　そして、年末までには、皆さんの英語の実力が素晴らしく上達していることに気付かれることを確信しています。　2013年を通じて、皆さんの英語学習の成功をお祈りしています。
