This is an enthralling romantic comedy with hearty laughs and a few tears. A 63 year old, rich, music producer, Harry (Jack Nicholson) has only been dating young women in their 20’s or 30’s and has avoided commitment all these years. He and his current girlfriend, Marin (Amanda Peet) decide to spend their romantic weekend at her mother’s beach house in her absence. However, out of the blue, her mother, Erica (Diane Keaton), a divorced playwright, comes back in the company of her sister, to work on her new play on the weekend. Erica, flabbergasted by her encounter with semi-dressed Harry, is in for an even more shocking discovery that this stranger, old enough to be her daughter’s father, is a date her daughter has invited. What is worse, shortly after their awkward dinner together, Harry has a heart attack and is rushed to the hospital, where Dr. Mercer, his cardiac specialist (Keanu Reeves), tells him to stay somewhere nearby until he recuperates. Erica, the only person available to look after Harry, has no choice but let Harry barge into her house, although she is appalled by the idea of having to share the house alone with him. The animosity they first felt towards each other, however, eventually dissolves into friendship and love. But after Harry recuperates, he goes back to his old life style. Erica, totally heartbroken, begins to fill the void by seeing Dr. Mercer, who is a great admirer of her plays with no reservations in expressing his love towards her. Where this eternal triangle goes is for you to find out.

I truly enjoyed this comical love story, full of witty conversations and insights into real life. Harry is a typical womanizer, unable to commit himself, and goes around getting involved in spontaneous love affairs with young girls, saying he prefers to "travel light." Erica, on the other hand, is as an intelligent, successful playwright, leading a very productive but regimented life, while successfully hiding her loneliness. These totally opposite characters come to find just the right chemistry in their relationship. It takes a while before their defense mechanisms allow them to jump into commitment, but they finally realize "something’s gotta give" in order to find out what it’s all about. The two veteran Oscar winning stars, Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton, are just fabulous in their performances. I just can’t think of anyone better than Jack Nicholson to play the aging, mischievous larger-than-life-size character of Harry. It is also very refreshing to see Diane Keaton whose individualistic character I once admired so much in her movie "Annie Hall." However, I must admit that a 36 year old handsome, doctor, falling head over heels in love with a woman 20 years older is a bit far fetched. Nonetheless, charming Keanu Reeves is a great asset to the movie. This movie portrays that aging should not scare you from loving someone and that we are never too old to have our time of life. If you are looking for a light hearted comedy with satisfaction guaranteed, this movie is the one to watch.
