On September 18th, 2007, Randy Pausch, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon University, delivered his last lecture called “Really Achieving your Childhood Dreams.” Back then, he was diagnosed with incurable pancreatic cancer. Despite his impending death, he passionately talked about how he lived the life he had already dreamed of and how he helped other people achieve their dreams. His lecture has caused a sensation on the Internet, inspiring millions of people around the world and will continue to inspire us all for many years to come.

Brick walls are there for a reason. Brick walls stand before us to test how badly we want to achieve something. Whatever our dreams are, we have to work at them and our tenacity will eventually get us over the brick walls.

Dr Pausch’s lecture left me with courage as well as some invaluable lessons I would like to treasure and also share with you. He tells us to stick at our dreams. We may get discouraged from pursuing our dreams when confronted with obstacles. But he said, “Brick walls are there for a reason.” Brick walls stand before us to test how badly we want to achieve something. Whatever our dreams are, we have to work at them and our tenacity will eventually get us over the brick walls. He also said, “the best shortcut is the long way, which is basically two words; work hard.” Even if we fall short of achieving our dreams, we gain valuable experiences along the way.

Dr. Pausche lost his battle to cancer on July 25th, 2008 at the age of 47. He must have had so many things he still wanted to achieve in his life and so many experiences he wanted to share with his wife and three young children. His early death is a constant reminder that our life is too precious to be wasted. We can’t afford to waste our time complaining about what we cannot do or what we should have done. Instead, we should turn the negative energy into solving a problem or reaching a goal.

This attitude applies to your experience with English as well. If you wish to reach certain level of proficiency, you should not put off your study till tomorrow or next week. Start now and continue to do it until you get the positive results you desire. You may hit many brick walls to get where you want to be. But remember, tenacity will get you over the walls. パウシュ教授の講義は、皆さんと分かち合い、心に刻んでおきたい貴重な人生の教えと また大きな勇気を私にも与えてくれた。 彼は 私たちに自分の夢に向かって突き進めよと語っている。 私たちは 障害に直面すると夢を追い求めるのを思いとどまるかもしれない。 しかし、彼は言っている。 「壁が立ちはだかるには理由がある。」と。 目前をさえぎる壁によって、私たちはどれくらい何かを達成したいかを試されているのだ。 私たちの夢が何にせよ、それに向かって精進することだ。 粘り強さによって やがてはその壁をのり越えることができる。 彼はまた次のようにも言っている。 「最良の近道は長い道のりだ。それは2つの言葉につきる。 すなわち work hard だ。」 たとえ、私たちが夢に手が届かなかったとしても、その道のりで貴重な体験を得ることができる。

パウシュ教授は、47歳の年齢で2008年7月25日に癌で亡くなった。 人生でまだまだ達成したかったことや、彼の妻と3人の小さな子供たちと分かち合いたかった経験が多くあったに違いない。 彼の若すぎる死は、人生は無駄に生きるにはあまりに貴重であると思い知らせてくれる。 私たちは 自分には何ができないとか、こうすべきであったとかと不平を言って時間を無駄にする余裕はない。 代わりに、その否定的なエネルギーを物事の解決や目標達成のために費やさなくてはいけない。
